Buffalo Roaming

Reports From The Road That Goes On Forever
8/22/2005

THE CONCERT THAT WAS REALLY REHEARSAL IN A CLUB THAT "DOESN'T" REALLY EXIST

I made my way over to Rome, but I didn't see the new Pope. Might have been because the Rome I was visiting was Rome, GEORGIA, and I was accepting the invitation from Chris Hicks (The Marshall Tucker Band) to be among a chosen few to witness the rehearsal of a new project he is involved in with Jimmy Hall (Wet Willie). It's a really cool project, with the two of then being backed up by an excellent band called The Mobile Homeboys.

The interesting thing was that the rehearsal was to take place at this really cool little bar/club called the High Lonesome Saloon. Its a great little place that can handle maybe a hundred souls packed in good- that is if there aren't too many plus-size rednecks crowding the bar.  The place is great. The owner, Mike, has it decorated with an autographed Lynyrd Skynyrd guitar, a  Charlie Daniels fiddle, lots of autographed pictures, posters and such from the world of Southern Rock. Makes this ol' boy feel right at home indeed.

Now, the interesting thing about High Lonesome is that it is top secret. Kinda like the Bat Cave. It is so secret, in fact, the was asked to put on a blindfold before I drove in. Now that is secret!

It's a private place, and Mike's customers are his closest friends from the area.  He throws concerts a few times a year, but they aren't advertised outside the group of regulars.  I mean, his place would be over run,  So it remains, like Bruce Wayne's Bat Cave, a deep, dark secret.

Mike and them were mighty good to the Buffalo. Everyone was so nice, and they served up some hot dinner, cafeteria style for everyone. Good eatin,' good conversation and adult beverages. Could get any better? Oh, hell yeah! The MUSIC

Soon, Jimmy Hall came in. He had just...

returned from a whirlwind tour with Jeff Beck of England and Japan, and man did he look tired out. But Jimmy's a trooper. After a plate full of Southern cuisine including an ear of fresh corn, Jimmy was ready to join Chris and the band in getting down to rehearsal.

Boy howdy, did they ever rock. I felt like a big dog, sitting front and center, my feet propped up, drinking a bottle of ice cold water and digging the music. The guys were rehearsing for a show in two days that would put them opening for Lynyrd Skynyrd there in Rome.

They played a bunch of Chris' songs and a bunch of Jimmy's, including the Wet Willie/Little Milton tune "Grits Ain't Groceries," "Rendevouz with the Blues,' "Love Will," and a rocking Hicks tune called "Southern Comfort." Oh yeah, and there was that little of song "Keep On Smilin" Awesome, yes indeedy.

A great time was had by all, especially the ol' Buffalo.  Wish I could have witnesses the boys open for Skynyrd, but hey, there's something down right cool about being one of only a handful to see this private rehearsal.  I felt blessed.  It was super bad.

Thanks to the band, Jimmy, Chris, Mike and his wife and Chris' sweet wife. I really enjoyed our chat dear. See y'all next time....the road goes on forever.
